Pickled onions are a really simple way to add an acidic and crunchy bite to your dishes. They add a touch of brightness that most dishes benefit from! These quick pickled onions would be delicious stuffed inside my Crispy Beef and Cheese Tacos or on top of my Easy Steak Salad with Roasted Potatoes. What’s so great about these pickled onions is they are so simple to make and will last in the fridge for weeks!
What You Need To Make Quick Pickled Onions
I love making a batch of Quick Pickled Onions to have in the fridge, because they’re such a breeze to make and they taste great on just about everything! You only need a few ingredients and a few minutes of prep and you’ve got yourself Quick Pickled Onions!
- Onions
- Garlic
- Vinegar
- Water
- Salt
- Sugar (you could also use honey, my favorite is BeeSeasonal Honey)
How to Make Quick Pickled Onions
This recipe is hardly a recipe, because it’s just so simple! It only takes about 5 minutes to prep and 30 minutes of hands-off chill time.
- Place onions and garlic in a glass jar and set aside.
- In a small saucepan, combine vinegar, water, salt, and sugar. Bring mixture to a boil then transfer to a measuring cup for easy pouring.
- Carefully pour liquid mixture over onions and garlic, making sure to fully submerge the onions.
- Cover and let sit at room temperature for 30 minutes before serving.
Questions About the Recipe
Definitely. You can use apple cider vinegar, rice vinegar or even white wine vinegar and red wine vinegar as long as the acidity level is 5% or above.
Red onions are most common for pickled onions, but this recipe can be made with yellow or white onions. You could even use shallots for a twist on a classic!
Since these are quick pickled onions, it’s best to consume within 2-3 weeks.

- 1-3 cloves Garlic thinly sliced
- ½ cup White Vinegar
- ½ cup Water
- 1 teaspoon Kosher Salt
- ¾ tablespoon White Sugar
